J.K. Rowling Adaptation ‘The Casual Vacancy’ Gets a Trailer & HBO Premiere Date

J.K. Rowling Adaptation ‘The Casual Vacancy’ Gets a Trailer & HBO Premiere Date:

Without a doubt, Harry Potter is going to go down as one of the world’s all time biggest success stories, as both literature and film. But, when you’re the creator of that series, where do you go from there? Why in the complete opposite direction of course. Enter, The Casual Vacancy.

Originally published in 2012, The Casual Vanancy was Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling’s first non-Potter book to be released following Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – so of course, that means every studio under the sun wanted to adapt it. Now, after 3 years of being on the book store shelves, that adaptation is just a short couple months away (for U.S. viewers) from its premiere on HBO.

According to a new report from TV By The Numbers, the Casual Vacancy mini-series (created by Sarah Phelps) will debut the first two of its ordered three episodes on the premium cable network on April 29th, with the final part of the story debuting on HBO a day later. As for U.K. viewers, the series will premiere this month on February 15th, ourtesy of BBC One.

Here’s the plot and main cast for Casual Vacancy:

The Casual Vacancy centers on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind the pretty façade, however, is a town at war: rich vs. poor, teenagers vs. parents, wives vs. husbands, teachers vs. pupils.

The cast includes Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes, Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan and Julia McKenzie, and introduces Abigail Lawrie.

Currently, Rowling is hard at work on a series adaptation of her novel “The Cuckoo’s Calling”, for which she’s written the script, for BBC One. In addition, she’s also co-writing the script for Warner Bros. return to the Harry Potter film universe in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, along with long-standing Harry Potter movie screenwriter, Steve Kloves.

Based on the trailer, it appears The Casual Vacancy series is one mostly meant for fans of the book and Rowling’s work in general. It’s a highly low-risk series thanks to its co-produced nature between BBC One and HBO – meaning, don’t expect this to be some kind of Game of Thrones epic.

The Casual Vacancy premieres April 29th, 2015 on HBO.
