Steven Moffat Confirms That The SHERLOCK Christmas Special Will Be Set In Victorian London

Co-creator of BBC’s Sherlock, Steven Moffat, revealed at SXSW that the highly anticipated special will not see Sherlock and Watson in contemporary London, but will instead see the duo in the Victorian Era.

Not so long ago Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were spotted wearing 19th century clothing while filming a Christmas Special for Sherlock. This led many fans to speculate whether or not this the special would be set in Victorian London.Today before attending a panel at SXSW, Steven Moffat spoke with Entertainment Weekly and confirmed that the special will in fact take place in the Victorian era.

“The special is its own thing, we wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes. So we had this to do it – as we could hardly conceal – it’s Victorian. [Co-creator Mark Gatiss] and me, we wanted to do this, but it had to be a special, it had to be separate entity on its own. It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”

Moffat then adds that they are pretty much finished with the Christmas special. While there is no exact air date set for the special it is expected to air some time in December.
